Chin surgery, also known as mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reshape the chin either by enhancement with an implant or reduction surgery on the bone. Chin surgery helps provide a harmonious balance to your facial features so that you feel better about the way you look.
Some people actually find that their chins are too large to fit in with their other facial features. By moderately reshaping the bone and other structural tissues, cosmetic chin reduction surgery can create a more pleasing contour for the face. No facial implants are necessary, and the results should appear natural in every way.
Chin surgery helps provide a harmonious balance to your facial features so that you feel better about the way you look.
A Chin reduction surgery begins with the surgeon making an incision inside the mouth (near the lower lip) or under the chin. Using specialized instruments, the surgeon detaches the bone at the tip of the chin and then reshapes and removes the excess bone to properly proportion the contour.
The tip is then repositioned with the remaining section of chin and held together using wires and plates. The incisions are sutured to complete the procedure.
Usually a chin reduction surgery takes around 1-4 hours to complete depending on the complexity of the surgery.
It isn’t a very painful surgery as general anesthesia is provided during the procedure. After the surgery patient may feel moderate pain but that is also taken care by your doctor, who prescribes you required analgesics.
The results are first and foremost natural. The goals of Chin Reduction Surgery are to restore an aesthetically pleasing facial shape which is in balance with your facial features – i.e. looks natural and does not appear abnormal. Remember it can take 6 weeks or more for the final result to be achieved post-operation.
The results of Chin Reduction Surgery are permanent but note that as you age your chin will change over the years. For example, the tissues around the chin will continue to be affected by the aging changes and gravity.
