Dimples are visible indentations of the skin, caused by underlying flesh, that form on some people's cheeks, especially when they smile. Cheek dimples are usually inherited and are a dominant genetic trait. When dimples are present, they are usually on both cheeks. It is rare that they occur on one side of the face only. Dimples may appear and disappear over an extended period.
In various cultures dimples are considered as a sign of good luck, apart from adding beauty to a smile. Although there are no functional purposes of dimples, as it adds to a person’s beauty it is moreover becoming a desired thing on faces of people, thus dimple creation surgeries are on the rise.
A dimple creation procedure (dimpleplasty) takes an approximate 30 minutes to complete. This is carried out under local anesthesia. The incisions are made in the inside of the cheek and there are no scars or incisions on the outside surface. A punch biopsy instrument is placed alongside the inner cheek (buccal mucosa) in lines with the location of the dimple and circular motions are made which cuts through the inner cheek, sub-mucosal and cheek muscle.
The circular tissue is removed and the skin is left intact. The skin is positioned appropriately to create a dimple and the cylindrical gap is closed with absorbable sutures. The sutures are placed through the cheek muscle connecting the dermis layer of the skin. A surgical knot is then tied which dimples the skin without a smile.
Over the first two weeks the sutures will dissolve and the skin flattens out. As the internal scar heals it connects the cheek muscle to the skin to create a dimple when smiling.
You may experience mild swelling and bruising for a few days following Dimpleplasty. You should be able to resume your normal daily activities on the morning following surgery. You can begin eating soft foods a few hours following the surgery.
Dr. Mrs. Nirved Jain prescribes analgesics in case some patients need them to overcome possible pain post-operation. Patients typically return to work as early as 1-2 days following the procedure. You will take an antibiotic for a few days as well.
Yes, the dimples created through Dimpleplasty look completely natural and are only visible when the patient smiles i.e. they won’t look like a permanent scar on your face.
The effects of a well done Dimplepasty last for a lifetime. After getting a dimple creation surgery done if any patient feels the effects are becoming less visible then he/she may get it deepened or made more superficial.
